UNTIL WE SEE OURSELVES AS SINNERS, WE WON'T SEE OUR NEED FOR A SAVIOR

God is holy and perfect and we are separated from Him by our imperfections. Humankind couldn't even follow the one rule about not eating from the tree in the middle of the garden, let alone the Ten Commandments (have you ever coveted something? See Exodus 20:17).

Dr. Francis Collins, the 2020 Templeton Prize Laureate and the leader of the Human Genome Project, and John Ortberg discuss the need for a savior:

And yet, also in 2020, Francis Collins participated in the cover-up of the lab leak in Wuhan, China which unleased death and destruction on the world. We are ALL sinners.

We are all sinners (Romans 3:23):   "...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God ."
God has defined sin... 1 John 3:4  "Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness."  James 4:17  "If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them. "
Romans 6:23   "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Since the wages of sin is death, the system God set up with Moses was animal sacrifice to atone for the sins of the people.  Because “...without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness” (Hebrews 9:22).  The animals were a temporary means to cover sin and pointed to the future perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ the Jewish Messiah.

God has also provided us with the means to deal with sin...(Romans 10:9-10) " If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved."

This profession of faith in Christ allows us to borrow the righteousness of Jesus to cover our sins and bridge the gap between us and God.
